IDRC is proud to be the sponsor, from September 2021, of a new Award to commemorate the life and work of Michael Mustill, one of the great figures of international and domestic arbitration, as a practitioner, scholar, judge and arbitrator

Lord Mustill was recognised for his exceptional intellect, analytical rigour and unassailable independence as a judge of the English High Court, the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords; qualities that he also carried into his career as advocate, arbitrator, administrator and author of works that include successive editions of Mustill & Boyd on Commercial Arbitration.

The award is to be funded by IDRC and Gray’s Inn, for which all student members of Gray’s Inn will be eligible to apply.

The award (or possibly more than one each year) will be available to help deserving students to fund internships or work placements, or additional arbitration-related study, attendance at relevant conferences, competitions or research opportunities.

Such support is increasingly needed in present circumstances, to give students – particularly those from less advantaged backgrounds – valuable experience not otherwise available, and thus the best chances of securing a pupillage.

Any enquiries may, in the first instance, be addressed to Rebecca Henderson at IDRC – Mustillaward@idrc.co.uk – who will pass them on to the award coordinators at Gray’s Inn.
